The Creative Brain

I wanted to share a little knowledge about the creative brain to finish off the Creative Self-Care Challenge Blog Series.

The brain in itself is a fascinating topic. Creativity or the creative brain is a topic that could be considered quite elusive. It is only in fairly recent times that medical research studies on the neuroscience and psychology of creativity were even considered.


The Creative Brain has benefits

Today there are a lot more studies, research and even educational centres for creativity. It is now understood that being creative has many benefits, whether you are doing it for health, wellbeing, pleasure, work, collaboration, community or any other reason.

People are looking for avenues to channel their creative energies, time and money in a different direction. A more authentic, heart-centred direction, away from the current commercial, online and fast-paced societal pathways of fulfilment.

Business, government and the economy are also on board with creativity. The concept of the Creative Economy was developed to highlight the move towards a creative based economy. It is based on the idea that knowledge is no longer the way of the future for business. Creativity is the way forward, and will be responsible for a directional change to business and to the world in general.

Creativity is being harnessed to solve world wide problems. It is forming a recognised emerging industry of influence. It is also providing a source of income to many small business owners world-wide who are building businesses based on their creativity, and the rising need for people wanting more creativity in their lives.

Wired to Create

The authors of the book Wired to Create looked at the ten things highly creative people do differently, and came up with some interesting finding. They came up with 10 attributes and habits:

Imaginative Play * Passion * Daydreaming * Solitude * Intuition * Openness to Experience * Mindfulness * Sensitivity * Turning Adversity into Advantage * Thinking Differently

An interesting note is that some of these attributes contradict each other, like mindfulness and daydreaming. What they also discovered is that creative people are very good at getting organisation from chaos. They often work with a ‘messy mind’ and workspace, and they are very good at managing seemingly contradictory attributes.

The authors found that by embracing their own contradictions, creative people are able to tap into their deepest creativity. Sounds a little bit like my last blog post on Being Spiritually Creative! It also sounds very much like tapping into intuition.

The authors also explore the work and lives of some notable creatives – Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Thomas Edison, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, chess champion Josh Waitzkin and video-game designer Shigeru Miyamoto to help us better understand creativity.


Everyday creatives and the creative brain

So we have gained some insight into the creative brain. How can we, as an everyday creative, use this information to enhance our own creativity? After all, we don’t all strive to be a professional creative. We may just wish to enjoy our creative interests and explore our creative soul.

Based on the 10 different attributes and habits of highly creative people mentioned above, lets break those down into something I believe the everyday creative in all of us can do:


  1. Imaginative Play

– Role play, dress-ups, drawing imaginary scenes, watching science fiction / fantasy films / reading the book versions

  1. Passion

–          Understand yourself and what lights you up, then go and do it!

  1. Daydreaming

–          Let you mind drift off at least once a day and dream about all that you wish could be

  1. Solitude

–          Spend some time focusing on you!

  1. Intuition

–          There are many ways you can work on this, but the main point is to listen to your inner voice

  1. Openness to Experience

–          Having the courage to be open to learning, open to new experiences and to be curious

  1. Mindfulness

–          Be in the present moment as often as possible, particularly when creating. Ignore the past moments and the future moments to allow yourself to feel the power of being present

  1. Sensitivity

–          Some people feel like sensitivity is a curse. Embrace your sensitivity, feel deeply and use your sensitivity to experience the ebb and flow of your life

  1. Turning Adversity into Advantage

–          Simply being positive, working on the power of your own thoughts

  1. Thinking Differently

–          Be curious, challenge the status quo, ask why and how. If you open your thinking you will start to see different ways of doing things. Tune into your imagination.


Creative Insights

I hope you have gained some new insight into the broad and far reaching topic of creativity from the 7 Day Creative Self-Care Challenge blog series.

Writing this blog series was a challenge I set myself to focus on writing for my own creative self-care. Time vanishes for me when I write and I enjoy the curiosity that comes with researching and writing. It inevitably leads me down a rabbit hole and I end up with 10 more blog topics while putting a blog together!
